What is the Foreign Legion?
Since 1831, the Foreign Legion or “Légion étrangère“, deployed in the front line of the French armed conflict, has been steeped in legend throughout French history and has a special image with the public.
The Foreign Legion, created by Louis-Philippe to operate in Algeria, won the Order of Nobility 32 years later at the Battle of the Cameron Estate in Tejeda, Mexico. Under the command of Captain Danjou, 62 veterans stood alongside 2,000 Mexican soldiers for 12 hours. As a result, they protected the logistical convoy while suffering heavy casualties. But these people respect the spirit of the corps, which means fulfilling the mission. “In life as in combat, legionnaires remain true to what they say and accomplish their mission, no matter what it takes,” reads the Foreign Legion’s website.
A true myth of the French army, the Foreign Legion was first known for welcoming foreigners wishing to join the French army and serving in it is an honor.
