Fortnite is undoubtedly one of the hottest video game in history. Very popular among teenagers, it has been released for years and is still the number 1 of Battle Royal games.

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is an online video game available on Playstation, X Box, Switch, PC, Mac and smartphone. Fortnite is an online game developed by Epic Games in the form of different software offering different game modes that share the same general gameplay and game engine. The game modes include Fortnite: Save the World, a cooperative shooter and survival game designed for up to four players with the goal of fighting zombies and defending objects with fortifications, and Fortnite Battle Royale, a free-to-play battle royale game where up to 100 players fight each other in increasingly smaller spaces with the goal of being the last survivor.

It comes in two modes: the first, called Fortnite Save the World, is based on cooperation and includes up to four players. The objective:  Fight zombies and build fortifications to protect yourself.

While both games were a success for Epic Games, Fortnite Battle Royale became a social phenomenon, attracting more than 125 million players in less than a year and generating hundreds of millions of dollars per month. Epic Games announced in 2019 that Fortnite had 250 million players, twice as many as in June 2018. Since the beginning of December 2020, it’s possible to take out a monthly subscription,

From what age can you play Fortnite?

Fortnite is rated PEGI 12, which means that it is forbidden to children under 12 (13 years old in the US).  It may contain scenes that can shock the youngest (nudity, violence …), as well as a slightly coarse language (but no sexual insults).

Is Fortnite a violent game?

Fortnite is a fighting game in which characters hold firearms. However, the cartoonish world of the online game does not make it realistic, so there is no confusion.

Although Fortnite is ruled by shooting, it does not contain detailed scenes of violence: there is no blood

Is there a vocabulary specific to Fortnite?

Emote, V-Buck, skins… These are all terms that are specific to Fortnite and that don’t mean anything to those who don’t play it.

Emotes are nothing more than the dances found in the video game. Floss, jubilation, Step it up… There are dozens of them. Among them, we find the Take the L dance, popularized by Antoine Griezmann. The soccer player performs this step when he scores a goal, the “L” in Take the L meaning “loser”.

The V-Buck is the currency used in Fortnite to purchase items, while skins refer to the appearance of the characters found in the video game.

Is Fortnite free?

While Fortnite Save the World is paid, Fortnite Battle Royale, the most successful version, is free.

Are there contacts with other players in Fortnite?

Users cannot choose their opponents and can communicate with each other at any time via chat which cannot be disabled. However, they can report violent or offensive exchanges via the game’s contact interface.

Why is Fortnite so successful?

Save the World mode reached over a million players in August 2017, just before the release of Battle Royale. Riding the wave started by H1Z1 and then PUBG, Fortnite Battle Royale became a significant financial success for Epic Games, leading them to separate the teams between Save the World and Battle Royale to better support both modes. Two weeks after release, more than 10 million players had played the mode, and by June 2018, just after the release of the Nintendo Switch, the number of players reached 125 million. Fortnite Battle Royale revenue in the first half of 2018 had been estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars per month.

Fortnite Battle Royale has also become an online cultural phenomenon, with several celebrities claiming to play the game, and athletes using Fortnite celebrations as victory celebrations. In March 2018, a notable streaming event, with streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins playing Fortnite Battle Royale alongside Drake, Travis Scott, Kim Dotcom and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, Pokimane with rapper Designer broke Twitch viewership records to date and led to Epic hosting a Fortnite Battle Royale pro-am with 50 pairs of streamers and pro gamers paired with celebrities at the 2018 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June 2018. Epic Games is working on developing eSports competitions organized around Fortnite Battle Royale, including the Fortnite World Cup tournament in 2019.
